This album is comprised of the extended composition for large ensemble, For Fannie Lou Hamer –&– the 9-part song cycle for small group, Vermeer. As noted above, it was originally issued [and remains available] as part of the 3CD box set / digital album: For Those Who Are, Still. It is being made available as a stand alone album for the first time here on bandcamp.

For Fannie Lou Hamer is one of William Parker's great extended compositions, and this kaleidoscopic performance thereof is riveting. It is an exceptionally potent sonic portrait of the indefatigable and profoundly inspirational American Civil Rights Movement activist & leader. Commissioned by renowned experimental arts space The Kitchen in NYC for performance by their 10-piece Kitchen House Blend ensemble, it was presented three times over three successive nights, in October of 2000 [and this recording is of the third night].

Also of note: this marks the very first time that singer Leena Conquest worked with William Parker. Parker wrote lyrics for his already completed music in order that she might join the assembly. As is amply demonstrated here, and in her subsequent work with WP’s Raining On The Moon & The Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield projects, her enunciation, phrasing and soulful contralto do exceptional justice to his words in song.

Ms. Conquest is also featured on Vermeer, a Parker-penned song-cycle recorded in a special studio session a decade later. Together with WP on bass, Raining On The Moon band-mate Eri Yamamoto on piano, and saxophonist Darryl Foster [a long-time Little Huey C.M.O. member; also appears on the album Uncle Joe's Spirit House by Parker's Organ Quartet], an air of intimacy and tenderness suffuse this beautiful work.
